The Sembalun route to Rinjani is a favorite route that offers a combination of vast savannah beauty and physical challenges. Starting from Sembalun Village (1,156 meters above sea level), this route passes through grasslands that stretch to Post 3 before steeply climbing to Plawangan Sembalun at an altitude of 2,639 meters above sea level. Hikers are treated to spectacular views of green valleys, the Indian Ocean panorama, and the iconic summit trail. Although the trek is heavy, especially on the ascent to the summit, the experience of watching the sunrise at the Rinjani Summit (3,726 meters above sea level) makes this route an unforgettable journey.

There is no new information related to volcanic activity through this route (20-01-25).
Water sources are only available at Post 2 (1,500 meters above sea level) and in the Plawangan Sembalun area (2,639 meters above sea level). Outside of these points, hikers must bring sufficient water supplies, especially for the dry and waterless summit trail.
This route is known for its dominant savannah fields, which account for almost 70% of the initial journey, offering open views and vast landscapes. However, direct exposure to the sun makes the trek feel heavier during the day.
The Sembalun route is usually busier during the dry season (April-October) due to the drier trail conditions. During the rainy season, the savannah can become very slippery and difficult to pass.
The Sembalun route offers the best sunrise view when hiking to the summit, with the background of Bali, Mount Agung, and the Indian Ocean clearly visible in the morning.

There are no new prohibitions related to hiking and volcanic activities through this route (20-01-25).
In the savannah and Plawangan Sembalun areas, lighting campfires is strictly prohibited due to the risk of fires, especially during the dry season. Hikers are only allowed to use portable stoves for cooking.
Edelweiss and savannah vegetation on this route are protected. Hikers are prohibited from picking or damaging plants during the journey.
Hikers are only allowed to set up tents in designated areas, such as Plawangan Sembalun or Post 3. Camping in the savannah without protection is considered risky due to extreme weather changes.
During the rainy season, the savannah route often becomes slippery and dangerous. Hiking is prohibited during bad weather conditions, especially if the national park management officially closes the route.
